2010 Grants Announced at KiDS Awards Dinner

Grants funded by KiDS of NYU in 2010:

Child Life, Family Services, and Outreach:

$25,000 - To support an Interdisciplinary Feeding and Swallowing Program for children.

$37,500 - To continue the Video-interaction Project which addresses poverty-related disparities in child development and social readiness.

$15,000 - To continue providing age-, development- and language-appropriate books for the youngest and neediest pediatric patients at Bellevue Hospital.

$24,925 - To provide continued funding for adapted recreation programs, including horseback riding, swimming and dance, for children with disabilities at the Rusk Institute.

$13,1200 - To launch a weekly horticulture therapy program specifically designed for adolescent patients at the Rusk Institute.

$10,750 - To provide ongoing support of the Horticultural Therapy Program at Tisch Hospital.

$17,000 - To continue supporting the Neonatology Bereavement Program.

$12,500 - To support the annual Neonatology Family Reunion for NICU graduates and their families.

$25,000 - To provide summer camp scholarships for children with epilepsy and seizure disorders.

$33,540- To launch the “Information Station” which includes print materials and online resources to educate families prior to surgical procedures and hospital admission at Tisch Hospital, the Rusk Institute, and the Hospital for Joint Diseases.

Research and Training:

$5,000 - To improve asthma care for children using low-literacy, pictogram-based tools to help prevent medication errors by parents and caregivers.

$10,000 - To launch a pediatric palliative care training program across multiple disciplines.

$12,500 - To implement a training program for Neonatal Intensive Care Unit staff to become certified in lactation consulting.

$24,120 - To support research into the diagnosis of retroviral infection among children and adolescents with a tentative diagnosis of chronic fatigue syndrome.

$10,000 - To fund research into the identification of a biomarker in cord blood which is associated with Congenital Heart Block.

$7,500- To continue funding the annual Northeast Pediatric Echo Conference.

$15,000 - To support research into leptin levels of pediatric patients with osteoperosis.

$38,473 - To fund the purchase of “WalkAide Systems” to evaluate children’s gait and improve walking ability for children at the Hospital for Joint Diseases.

Facilities, Technology and Equipment:

$12,436 - To continue providing "Thera-Togs", custom-fit undergarments that help improve posture and balancing in children with musculoskeletal and neurological conditions.

$15,000 - To purchase additional adaptive bicycles for children with physical disabilities, enhancing their mobility and socialization.

$4,000 - To support family education workshops for children with spinal cord injury, to facilitate a smoother transition to home, school and the community.

$4,200 - To purchase additional assistive communication devices for children who have lost their ability to speak.

$6,700 - To purchase adaptive toys which promote motor, cognitive and linguistic skills for children with multiple disabilities.

$7,200 - To purchase special catheters which are used as a monitoring tool to detect asynchrony in children on ventilators.

$9,000 - To purchase a cerebral function monitor to assess infant hypothermia, used in conjunction with the Cool Cap System.

$51,000 - To purchase a special transport system with a “Bronchotron” ventilator to manage critical respiratory issues during transport of neonatal and pediatric patients.

$6,373 - To purchase special home-monitoring equipment for children with hypoplastic left heart syndrome.

$50,000 - To purchase a 3D cranial imaging system that works in conjunction with CT scan to help with pre-surgical facial reconstruction planning for children.
