NICU graduates enjoyed a fun afternoon filled with food, games, and arts and crafts. It gave doctors, nurses and staff the opportunity to catch up on the progress of youngsters who spent time in the NICU, either because they were born prematurely or required medical or surgical care soon after birth. And for families, it was a chance to say thanks and heal.

As Nanine Iengo, mother of NICU graduate Teddy, explained, “Coming back to NYU’s NICU for my husband and me is like coming home. It is always welcoming and always feels good to see everyone who played such an integral part in the success of my son’s stay at the NICU.” Teddy, was born at 24 weeks is now a healthy three year old. “Attending the reunions and connecting with other families who had similar feelings as us was integral to our healing as a family.  Showing off our ‘big healthy’ boy to the doctors and nurses who lovingly cared for him, reinforces the work that they do on a daily basis and helps erase the pain that we went through.”

At the 2011 KiDS Springfling Gala, held on May 10 at The Plaza Hotel, KiDS celebrated 20 years of supporting pediatrics at NYU Langone Medical Center.  This year’s event, attended by more than 450 supporters, honored David S. Feldman, MD, chief of the Division of Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgery at NYU Langone’s Hospital for Joint Diseases.

The event raised over $1.3 million towards the transformation of pediatric services at NYU Langone—to enhance clinical and supportive care for young people, foster research into childhood illnesses, and create an environment tailored to the unique needs of children and families

Speakers paid tribute to Dr. Feldman and included his patients Maurice Elbaz, Kyra Slive, and Douglas Mu; KiDS Chair Alice Tisch; Event Co-chairs Patty Newburger and Brad Wechsler; Catherine Manno, MD, the Pat and John Rosenwald Professor of Pediatrics and chair of the Department of Pediatrics; and Dean and CEO Robert I. Grossman, MD.

On May 2, NYU Langone Medical Center broke ground on the construction of a new Center for Emergency Services, which includes a dedicated pediatric emergency care area. The creation of the Pediatric Emergency Care Center was made possible by the generosity of Trudy Elbaum Gottesman and Robert Gottesman, and KiDS of NYU Langone.

NYU Langone Medical Center has been designated a Baby-Friendly^TM Hospital—the only academic medical center in New York City to receive this prestigious designation and one of only 105 hospitals and birth centers nationally. The Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative is a global program sponsored by The World Health Organization and the United National Children’s Fund to encourage and recognize hospitals that offer an optimal level of care for breastfeeding mothers and their infants. These hospitals focus on making breastfeeding a viable option and encourage mothers to be with their newborns 24 hours a day.

Training staff is part of the process in becoming Baby-Friendly. A grant from KiDS in 2010 allowed 48 professionals, including 15 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit nurses and one doctor, to attend a five day Certified Lactation Counselor Training Course. In thanking KiDS for their support, Karen Goodman, RN, MA, IBCLC, LCCE, nurse manager of the Mother-Baby Unit at NYU Langone said, “The Lactation Counselor program provided us with additional expertise and knowledge to give evidence-based care to our patients” an important step in NYU Langone becoming Baby-Friendly.

At the annual Awards Dinner on February 9 KiDS announced funding for 53 proposals totaling just over $491,000. The grants, based on requests from faculty and staff, provide critical funds to support quality of life, teaching and research, and equipment and technology–all to help support the excellence for which pediatrics at NYU Langone Medical Center is recognized.

The event at The Loews Regency Hotel brought members of the KiDS board of directors together with pediatricians, pediatric subspecialists, and pediatric staff to celebrate the recipients of funds raised in the previous year. The globe-themed decor reflected KiDS’ and NYU Langone Medical Center’s commitment to providing world-class pediatric care.

Score another success for the KiDS Strikes Again! Family Bowling party. The event on January 30 drew 400 guests who helped raise over $100,000 to support pediatric medicine at NYU Langone Medical Center. Children, parents, pediatricians and friends enjoyed an afternoon of bowling, face-painting, caricaturists, magicians, and more at Chelsea Piers.

The event was co-chaired by Lisa Anderson, Abigail Scheuer Atema, Gabrielle Gold-von Simson, MD, MSc, Mihal Nahari, Joshua Laterman, Kimberly Greenspan Pozner, David Salsberg, PsyD, and Michael Weaver.

The event recognized Dr. Achi Ludomirsky, professor of pediatrics and director of Pediatric Cardiology at NYU Langone Medical Center, who arrived in 2008 and has since helped to build a powerhouse program in pediatric cardiology. Among highlights for the 500 guests in attendance were emotional tributes from two teenage girls as well as the parents of two young children, for the medical care they received from Dr. Ludomirsky and his team.

Also recognized for her contributions to pioneering and advancing the field was Dr. Eugenia Doyle, director of pediatric cardiology from 1962 to 1993. A portion of the proceeds from Springfling helped to establish the Andrall E. Pearon Professorship in Pediatric Cardiology. Pearson was a longtime friend, board trustee and supporter of NYU Langone Medical Center.
