Dr. Joan Gold, director of children’s rehabilitation services at Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine, has received ongoing support from KiDS for adaptive bicycles and other aids for children undergoing treatment at Rusk.
“It’s not just a matter of equipment, but of inspiring children to establish a sense of passion and possibility… KiDS is a part of that, and we are all so very grateful.” – Joan T. Gold, MD
KiDS helped sponsor the 2011 We Believe in Miracles reunion. The event is a moving celebration that brings together hundreds of “alumni” of the Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs) at Tisch Hospital and Bellevue Hospital each year.

The Iengos with their son, NICU graduate Teddy, at the We Believe in Miracles Reunion held on June 26. Born at 24 weeks, Teddy is now a healthy 3 year old.
“Coming back to NYU’s NICU for my husband and me is like coming home…After we left the NICU it took about two years for life to feel normal and what helped us get through were the people we had these shared experiences with. Attending the reunions and connecting with other families who had similar feelings as us was integral to our healing as a family. Showing off our ‘big healthy’ boy to the doctors and nurses who lovingly cared for him reinforces the work that they do on a daily basis and helps erase the pain that we went through.” – Nanine Iegno, NICU Graduate Mother
In a heartfelt letter, Dr. Joseph McCarthy, director of the Institute of Reconstructive Plastic Surgery, thanks KiDS for the 2011 grants to establish a parent support network, develop educational programs for patients and families, and purchase of special feeding bottles for children with cleft lip and palate to give to families in need.
“All of us on the staff of the Institute of Reconstructive and Plastic Surgery admire KiDS for all that the organization has done on behalf of our little patients.” – Joseph G. McCarthy, MD
